George Shaw - Living Room Curated by Jonathan Watkins

Apt Architects 235 St John Street London EC1V 4NG

15 October - 18 December 2026

George Shaw Living Room curated by Jonathan Watkins at Apt Architects.

The exhibition comprises four paintings depicting Shaw’s family home in Coventry shortly after his mother’s death. Rooms have been cleared of furniture: curtains, gas fireplace, radiators and pendant lampshades are amongst the fixtures and fittings that remain. These are interiors that would have once been brimming with the busy-ness of parents and young children, children becoming young adults who would eventually be leaving two empty nesters behind. And now this. Bare walls, some with windows looking onto a close world beyond, a door that would have been passed through countless times, an adjacent light switch, the small phone connection box on the skirting board … It could not be more poignant.

This will be the first exhibition of paintings in the Making Space programme, requiring walls which the existing Studio space lacks, and so the artist has worked with the Apt team to create a partitioned interior with the dimensions of the living room in Tile Hill. It is an architectural space that reiterates another that was formative, a room shaped by a long-lost architect that afterwards went some way to shaping George Shaw.

There will be also a series of similar themed drawings There There Now accompanying the exhibition.
